Project 9: Portfolio

Portfolio (Scribd.com):

Project Corrections / Time Spent: 20 min adjusting the layout and look of the entire portfolio. I spent approximately 10 min on each project–with the Letterhead and Business card taking about 5 min each for a total of 10– making minor adjustments to each project, essentially retouching the colors, making a small adjustment of positioning in particular for the Flier and Letterhead.

Message: I want to showcase my work in a professional way.  I also wanted to showcase what I can do on Photoshop with the background image.

Audience: Potential client and employers.

Top Thing Learned: Sometimes things can be spread across two pages and look better than if it was repeated on both.

Future application of Visual Media: I will look for opportunities to improve the quality of design in both my work place and my personal life (such as church).

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, blue

Project 8: Brochure

P8-ChristianMolinaFront and Back

P8-ChristianMolina2Inside

Description:
A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

I set up the document like the tutorial gave us so that it would have the gridlines all set up so I could use them. From there I then started adding black boxes as my backdrops to the titles and headings. I also added a medium grey border around each section of the brochure to make it look like the inside areas were pages on a Word document.

Once I had my pictures all chosen, I threw them randomly onto each page that they needed to go on. Once I had the text finalized and put into the program, that is when I arranged the images to work right and have the text wrap around them as needed.

I realized once everything was almost done that I had completely forgotten a logo, so I designed on and placed it so it would be on the outside bottom corners of each page.

Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop

Message: Inform my audience on how to write a decent fiction novel.

Audience: Beginning authors

Top Thing Learned: I learned how to wrap text around an image in InDesign.

Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic,  grey

Project 7: Web Page

P7ChristianMolinaScreenshot

Description:
A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I am well-versed in HTML and CSS from another class I am taking this semester. I created this page initially in NetBeans IDE 8.0.1 to get the formatting correct so I wouldn’t have to deal with that later. From there I used Notepad++ to make adjustments on the fly to the page for quick and easy viewing of said adjustments.

After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I declared some backup fonts just in case the viewer’s browser didn’t have these fonts. I also used margin adjustments around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page.

Programs/Tools Used: Notepad++, NetBeans IDE 8.0.1 & Photoshop

Message: That my company FOXY Wear Clothing is a 100% pure fox fur clothing line.

Audience: Anyone who likes foxes or fox fur clothing.

Top Thing Learned: How horrible some floated images can make text look.

P6ChristianMolina_cardBusiness Card (Large Layout):

P6ChristianMolina_cardsDescription:
Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally created logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):
I created the logo using Adobe Photoshop using various colors and brushes on a single layer. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign document.

On my first page I used the rectangle tool to create the front and back outline of my business card. I then added the logo and contact information onto this page. I made sure that no important information came any closer than 1/8″ from the edges. Finally, I took the logo and flipped it to give it some depth as if it was standing on the same spot no matter which way the card is viewed..

I decided to make my second page the letterhead. I positioned the placed logo in the top left corner of my letterhead and reversed it to face the inside of the page. I made sure to keep it at least .5″ away from the edges. I then added the catchy title next to the logo and enlarged the A to make it stand out from the rest. I then typed my contact information into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I made my name 12pt font to contrast with the 10pt contact information. I added in a long line across both the top and bottom of the page with a shadow added to it for depth and interest. I also added a large black and white “A” as a watermark. I kept the opacity to about 3%.

Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop & InDesign

Message: This is a business card I may end up using myself to promote myself to future employers as an animator and character artist. It features a custom piece of artwork on the work itself.

Audience:  Employers who work for gaming and/or animation companies.

Top things learned: How to brand a company using a unified letterhead and business card design.

Project 5: Logos

ChristianMolina-P5Logos

Description:
Three logo variations for the same company.
Process: This was both fun and difficult to do. Using the pen tool was a lot of fun, but the foxes nearly gave me fits trying to get them to look right. I first outlined each figure in straight pen lines. Then I came back and curved it out in specific spots to give it a more natural feel. Then I worked with colors to see what would work best and came out with what I did.

Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator
Message: FOXY Wear is a Japan based clothing company originally called 狐着 (Kitsune Wear) which when it went world-wide became FOXY Wear.
Audience: Anyone who likes foxes or fur clothing.
Top Thing Learned: How to draw using the pen tool

Project 4: Montage

ChristianMolina-P4Montage-DeathDescription:
A montage on remembering that death is always near.

Process:

  1. I cropped the background image to just show part of the upper section.
  2. I grabbed the spirit and placed him at the top right corner before adding a mask.
  3. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I got rid of the hard lines.
  4. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 30% flow, I pressed it once on a size large enough to cover it completely.
  5. I repeated the process with the masks, but I separated out the masks onto separate layers to place them in their own locations. I then started masking it until it was a gradual blend.
  6. I added some type with one font and I added a layer style (overlay) on a duplicated layer to make the title more legible.
  7. I added a couple filters to three layers: the spirit, and two masks.
  8. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop

Message: I wanted to make a nod to my favorite video game that has to deal with remembering that death is always nearby but that it is not to be feared.
Audience: Anyone interested the video game, Persona 3, or those afraid of death.
Colorized/Filter applied and where: .I used the Craquelure texture on two masks on the buildings. I used a Graphic Pen filter on the spirit in the upper right.
Color scheme : Analagous and color names:  Green, Yellow, Dark Green, Black, and White
Top thing learned: Strategic placement of various images

Project 3: Photodesign

ChristianMolina-P3Photodesign-FruitsDescription: Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills: I originally decided on a monochromatic color scheme out of the visual focus book, but it eventually turned into an analagous scheme with how the text came out. I used a basic digital camera of my grandmother’s to take a picture of a lime on her trees. I then took it into Photoshop, put a mask around it to focus on the fruit alone. Then I picked a light and dark shade of green off the lime itself to use in two gradients. I then played around with different gradients and how they were layered before coming up with this. From there I picked out fonts that seemed appropriate and curved them with the warp tool to align with the circles. I then changed the layer style to make it stand out sharply from the green.

Message: I wanted to emphasize the importance of eating healthy through fruit.
Audience: People who need to eat healthier (i.e. most of America)
Top Thing Learned: I learned that even something as simple as using two gradients together makes a big difference.
Color scheme: Analagous Color Names: Dark Green, Light Green (Lime?), Pale Yellow, White, Black

This was a rather fun activity for the most part. It was a bit frustrating in places, mostly trying to figure out how to change the settings on the camera for this assignment, and figuring out what to take the pictures of. Being in the desert, there isn’t all that much interesting to get a picture of.

While I was outside trying to take the pictures, one of the strays came around and I thought to myself. I have to get a picture of these strays, they’re so adorable that they’ll be perfect. Unfortunately, it ran away before I could use it in the pictures. Other than that, it was mostly just playing around with the flash settings for the interior shots that took a while.

Project 2: Event Ad

P2ChristianMolina-page-001

Description:

A full-color ad to describe a charity auction involving a comic artist.

Process:

I didn’t realize I had to use the ad from the previous assignment, the Scanning one, so I didn’t end up using it. Instead I used a scanned copy of a book I had on my bookshelf and a photo of the author found on the internet. From there I inserted the pictures “behind” the text so it could be moved and placed without constraints. I added a border to them to make them stand out more from the white backdrop. I used the same technique on the date and time. I used a different box around the title and subtitle to fit the comic theme more. From there it was just using the edge markers to align the text to fit right.

Message

This is a false advertisement based off a real event I had a hand starting earlier this year. It’s to raise money for charity through the sale of original prints.

Audience:
Anyone in or around the community, looking to support the community.

Top thing learned:
I learned how to scan properly.

Color scheme and color names:
Monochromatic

Title Font Name & Category: Baveuse – Decorative

Copy Font Name & Category: Berlin Sans FB – Sans Serif

Scanned images used,  sources, original sizes:

This image was scanned from the Brody’s Ghost volume 1 cover. The image was originally 6″ x 9″. So I scanned it at 150 resolution to make it so I could print a little bigger. Image final scan size was 900px x 1350px

Project 1 Flyer

Christian-Molina-InDesign-Flyer Description: Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Process: First I made a few sketches of ideas to make the flier with. After picking one I used it to create layouts in a variety of programs before creating the final layout in InDesign. I set “Graduate” in a large black box to make it stand out from the white background. I used the picture I did, where I did, to make it look like she was referencing the text next to her.

Message: I am trying to reach new graduates who want to have better leadership skills in business.

Audience: Recent graduates who are in their mid-to-late twenties.

Top thing learned: I learned the importance of arranging pieces of a composition to maximum effect.
